This one-of-a-kind teak structure is a truly awe-inspiring sanctuary to a philosophical truth, which tells of the importance religion, philosophy and art has played in human development and the folly of neglecting morality and spiritual contentment in the pursuit of materialism. It is a beautiful and humbling demonstration of human endeavour and skill, particularly when you realise that none of the wood being used has been treated or chemically protected. This means that, as one section is completed, another has succumbed to the tropical conditions and must be replaced.

Art in Paradise is a fun and fresh take on an art gallery that has closed the divide between art and spectator with three-dimensional paintings that are interactive and laugh-out-loud funny. Through clever use of shading and borders, artists have painted directly on to walls to create stunning images that trick our eyes into thinking animals are smashing through walls, friends are balancing over raging waterfalls and polar bears are stealing a sip of our coconut. The gallery has over 100 individual art pieces in ten themed sections, covering optical illusions, wild animals, nature, past civilisations and reproductions of classic art with witty additions such as bright pink nail polish on a pre-Raphaelite beauty, or a pencil added to the Mona Lisa so you can be Leanardo Da Vinci… for a second, at least.
There can be few sights in Pattaya quite as bizarre as a two-metre-tall realistic model of a Tyrannosaurus Rex being cuddled by three teddy bears dressed as cavemen. A curious combination of adorable and baffling, the Teddy Bear Museum (also known as Teddy Island) contains about 1,000 stuffed animals, ranging in size from little Christmas helpers no bigger than your hand to a three-metre-long giant panda. The family-friendly indoor exhibition takes the form of a journey through history and fantasy, entirely acted out by cuddly toys. The majority of the dioramas can be at least touched, if not interacted with, making it extremely popular with younger children.
A fun way to see the wonders of Thailand and the world, Mini Siam displays models of some of the most famous international sites. There is a lot more to this 4 km crescent of coastline than just sand and sea. In fact, the beach is not even the star attraction, even if it is home to a huge number of speedboats, parasails and jet skis, as well as diving boats and floating restaurants. Pattaya Beach Road, which is just a line of palm trees away from the shore, is the place to be.
So, what have you been missing out? Nothing life-changing, really, but perhaps a handful of odd facts about the world you live in. A lot of the exhibits focus on things you least expect to see, which have made the museum famous in the first place, such as a mask made from human skin, real shrunken human head, primitive torture devices and a wax figure of a four-eyed man, among others. Some are actual items, while others are replicas. But odd is not the only thing you will find at the museum. The exhibits extend to curious facts and inventions, such as a Titanic made of more than one million matchsticks and a model of the 1937 Jaguar that’s actually a motorboat. Apart from the museum, other attractions at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! include The Infinity Maze, Ripley’s 4D Moving Theatre, Ripley’s Haunted Adventure and Tussauds Wax Museum. You can easily spend an entire day here and leave with fascinating tales to pass on to friends and family back home.

The sights and sounds of Walking Street are quite unlike anything else in Thailand. Other towns and cities try to claim to have their own version, but nothing comes close to matching the 500 metres of fun which is found at the end of Pattaya’s Beach Road. Taking its name from the fact that it is closed to vehicle traffic after 18:00, almost every building on both sides of the road – as well as many in the side streets around it – is a nightclub, beer bar, restaurant or go-go bar to the extent that the road is almost completely deserted during daylight hours as virtually everything is shut. At night, however, the road comes alive with neon lights, thumping music from different genres, food vendors, street performances and party animals from around the world.

There are several places you can go in Pattaya to enjoy a fantastic view of the city, but there is none that can rival the view from a hundred metres above Pattaya Bay. You can see the brightly-coloured parachutes zigzagging around the sky, drawn by speedboats which will occasionally cut their engines so that the parasailer drops into the sea before leaping back into the air again as the boat powers up. Vendors can be found along Pattaya Beach selling the short but exhilarating experience from about 500 baht up per person.
With impressive coral reefs surrounding the Near and Far Islands and five shipwrecks to explore, Pattaya is a fantastic place to scuba dive in Thailand. The conditions which make the area so good for sailing and cruises also make it enjoyable for divers, which is why there are dozens of centres and shops to choose from. The water is not as clear as it is further to the south of Thailand and the wildlife is not as exciting, which is why the destination is not as widely known. Unlike the south, however, diving is possible throughout the year and is not obstructed by monsoons.
It was the area’s picturesque natural beauty which first attracted visitors to Pattaya and, while the charming little fishing village may have evolved into a colourful cityscape, the scenery still attracts large numbers of people. The best views across the bay are from the hills to the south of the city, from which the “Pattaya City” sign flashes in vibrant colours. Both the sign and the very popular viewpoint at the top of Khao Pattaya are easy accessed along tarmac roads and provide picture-postcard scenery at any time of the day or night.

Correctly known as the “Four Regions Floating Market”, the sub-sections of this 100,000sqm development represent the four major areas of Thailand – the north, northeast, central and south. This representation comes in the form of shops and stalls selling souvenirs, fruits, food, art, handicrafts, postcards and clothing as well as regular cultural shows and demonstrations.
